چکیده

MICHAELSON (1954), writing on the retinal blood vessels in man, stated that "an artery crossing an artery, or a vein crossing a vein, has not once been reported, or been personally observed". This is in keeping with the present hypothesis that the development of retinal vessels in vertebrates is stimulated by a local intraretinal factor. In man, each quadrant of the fundus accumulates, during development, sufficient of this factor to attract to itself a vessel complex. Thereafter, it affects maximally the nearest budding vessel, thus explaining the rarity of an artery crossing an artery, or a vein crossing a vein. The two following cases show respectively a retinal vein crossing a retinal vein and a retinal artery crossing a retinal artery.

Morphological Exudate Detection in Retinal Images using PCA-based Optic Disc Removal

Diabetic retinopathy lesion detection such as exudate in fundus image of retina can lead to early diagnosis of the disease. Retinal image includes dark areas such as main blood vessels and retinal tissue and also bright areas such as optic disk, optical fibers and lesions e.g. exudate. In this paper, a multistage algorithm for the detection of exudate in foreground is proposed. The algorithm se...

Extracting Vessel Centerlines From Retinal Images Using Topographical Properties and Directional Filters

In this paper we consider the problem of blood vessel segmentation in retinal images. After enhancing the retinal image we use green channel of images for segmentation as it provides better discrimination between vessels and background. We consider the negative of retinal green channel image as a topographical surface and extract ridge points on this surface. The points with this property are l...

Automatic Optic Disc Center and Boundary Detection in Color Fundus Images

Accurately detection of retinal landmarks, like optic disc, is an important step in the computer aided diagnosis frameworks. This paper presents an efficient method for automatic detection of the optic disc’s center and estimating its boundary. The center and initial diameter of optic disc are estimated by employing an ANN classifier. The ANN classifier employs visual features of vessels and th...

Histochemical study of retinal photoreceptors development during pre- and postnatal period and their association with retinal pigment epithelium

Objective(s):The aim of this study was to evaluate distribution and changes of glycoconjugates of retinal photoreceptors during both pre- and postnatal development. Materials and Methods: Tissue sections from days 15 to 20 of Wistar rat embryos and 1 to 12 postnatal days of rat newborns including developing eye were prepared for lectinhistochemistry technique. Horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-label...

Morning Glory Syndrome and the Role of 3D OCT in Its Management

MGS is an uncommon congenital optic disc anomaly, which was first described by Kindler [1]. It is characterized by an enlarged funnel-shaped dysplastic disc with glial tissue. The retinal vessels are increased in number, appear to arise from the disc edge and run an abnormally straight course over the peripapillary retina [2,3]. Retinal detachment may occur in about one-third of cases of MGS [4...
